Post Cardiac Care UnitSt. Mary’s Regional Medical Center has a new, larger PCCU (Post Cardiac Care Unit) to provide round-the-clock care for fragile hearts. The PCCU is dedicated to patients who have cardiovascular heart disease, congestive heart failure and those who are recovering from heart attacks or open-heart surgery.
The 17-bed PCCU includes ten new rooms in the 4 West wing, seven rooms in the 4 East wing and a central nursing station that is staffed by nurses who specialize in cardiac care. Three more rooms will be added to the 4 East wing, bringing the total to 20 beds. All of the rooms are private, with their own bathrooms, and spacious enough to allow a family member to stay overnight, if needed.
The rooms in the 4 West wing provide care outside of the ICU for patients who require constant, comprehensive monitoring of blood pressure, EKG, oxygen levels and other vital signs. “We’ve equipped these rooms with advanced bedside monitors to alert the nurses whenever there’s the slightest change in a patient’s vital sign,” says Virginia McCall, Director of Heart Services and Critical Care. Patients who do not require this level of care also are monitored by the PCCU through wireless EKG devices, which enables them get out of bed and walk around.
“The new PCCU allows cardiac patients to receive personalized, specialized care without being in the ICU” says Ms. McCall. “It’s a place where our entire focus is on our patients’ hearts and helping them to recover.”
